About this book

Out of ideas? Never out of roads.

If you ride a motorbike around Norwich, you know how it goes. You love the machine — but the same old routes blur into one, and "where shall I go this weekend?" becomes the question that quietly keeps the bike in the garage.

Motorcycle Escapes from Norwich and East Anglia is the answer to that question, 169 times over.

It's a guidebook of day-trip destinations within about ninety minutes of Norwich, put together by a rider who got bored of the same three loops and went looking for better ones. This one began with a week in the city: the days were spoken for, so the mornings were his. He rode out at half past five, somewhere new every morning. The first of them took him to Wells-next-the-Sea, to stand looking at the beach huts on their stilts under the pines before most people had gotten up — and that was that.

He had expected the place to be dull. That is the reputation: flat, empty, on the way to nowhere. Two of those are true and the third is nonsense. Norwich sits twenty miles from the sea, so a third of the day-ride circle is water and the land half runs deeper than usual — the Broads and the crumbling coast to the north-east, the Suffolk shore and the airfields to the south, the Brecks and the Fens west to Ely, and the Wash round to King's Lynn.

What's inside

  • 169 destinations grouped into 26 regional chapters — each a self-contained day out
  • A colour locator map for every chapter, with numbered stops so you can string several together into a proper ride
  • Practical details — parking, opening times, admission, and the catches that matter on a bike
  • An original illustration for every landmark, and a different classic motorcycle opening every chapter

Who it's for

It's for riders in Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Thetford, King's Lynn and Ely who want fresh destinations without a fortnight of research — and for anyone coming to East Anglia from outside it who has heard of Cromer and the Broads and assumed that was the lot. You don't need to be fast, or brave, or on any particular machine: nearly all of this sits at the end of ordinary roads, a short walk from where you park.
