Mid Wales motorcycle routes: empty uplands and open roads

Mid Wales is one of the quietest places to ride a motorbike in Britain. Powys and Ceredigion are sparsely populated, and the roads climb out of the valleys onto big, smooth, grassy hills where you can ride for long stretches without meeting a junction, a roundabout or another vehicle. Sweeping A-roads and quiet B-roads link small market towns, and the scenery changes from farmland to bare moor to wooded river valley within an hour.

That emptiness is the appeal, and it shapes how the riding feels. Views are long and sightlines are often good, so you can settle into a steady rhythm rather than fight for space. It is relaxed, unhurried riding, better suited to a full day out than a quick blast. The reservoirs that sit in the upland valleys add water and open skyline to the route without ever pulling you into a busy attraction.

Cambrian Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog motorbike routes

Two areas anchor most Mid Wales motorcycle routes. The Cambrian Mountains cover the high central uplands, a wide, rolling country of grass and moor that is often called the Green Desert of Wales. It has no national park of its own, but for riders it is the heart of the region: long climbs, few buildings and a lot of sky. If you are searching for Cambrian Mountains motorcycle roads, this is the kind of country to expect.

To the south, Bannau Brycheiniog, still widely known as the Brecon Beacons, was designated a national park in 1957 and took its Welsh name in April 2023. It brings steeper ridges, broad moorland and mountain passes, and it is an International Dark Sky Reserve. Brecon Beacons motorbike routes tend to be more dramatic than their northern neighbours, with higher ground and a bit more traffic in the popular corners.

Our Mid Wales rides start from market towns such as Brecon, Llandovery, Rhayader and Machynlleth, so you can park easily, fill up and get going. Each GPX is planned to avoid U-turns, dead ends, motorways and unpaved tracks, and it loads straight into your satnav or phone.

When to go and what to plan for on Mid Wales motorcycle rides

Late spring to early autumn is the comfortable window. The hills are high and exposed, so weather changes quickly: a bright valley can sit under low cloud on the tops, and the wind picks up where there is no shelter. Pack a waterproof layer even on a good forecast, and expect the temperature on the moors to be noticeably lower than where you started. In winter, higher roads can be icy, so check conditions before setting off.

Livestock is part of the road. Much of the open moorland is grazed by Welsh mountain sheep and ponies, and where roads are unfenced they wander across them, often just beyond a crest or a bend. Ride at a speed that lets you stop, and give animals plenty of room. Lambs in spring can be unpredictable.

Fuel is sparse in the uplands. Villages are small and distances between filling stations can be long, so start with a full tank and top up whenever you pass a pump rather than waiting for the next one. Mobile signal can also drop out in the valleys, so download your route and any maps before you leave.

Honey-pot spots, such as well-known viewpoints, visitor centres and roadside cafés, get busy on fine summer weekends and bank holidays. A weekday ride, or an early start, makes a real difference. Because the roads are so quiet, you will often find you have them to yourself.

Mid Wales & Brecon Beacons rides start from Aberaeron, Abergavenny, Brecon, Builth Wells, Llandovery, Machynlleth and Rhayader.
