About this ride

A gentle circuit that goes round a big block of high hills rather than over it. Valley roads run beneath steep, bracken-brown slopes, then a river road leads to a bookish border town, and the return follows a quiet wooded valley with lovely views.

Nothing here is technical, which makes it a good first ride in the area or a relaxed day with a long lunch. The busiest stretch is the trunk road at the start and end, so leave early at weekends. There are plenty of fuel and food stops, and it is at its best in late summer when the hillsides turn purple.
