About this ride

This ride is built around one big mountain pass that climbs from a wooded valley onto bare, unfenced moor and rewards you with huge views and sweeping bends. After the descent, a valley road and a trunk road bring you back through gentler country.

The pass is the hardest part: it is exposed, there are sheep and wandering ponies on the road, and the weather can change in minutes, so keep the pace sensible and ride the bends you can see. Fuel up in town before you start. It is at its best on a clear morning between May and September, and best avoided in ice or low cloud.
