About this ride
A compact loop through Highland Perthshire for a day when you want the Highlands without the commitment. It follows a long, forested loch shore, passes a well-known viewpoint, then climbs over open hill below a distinctive peak before dropping into a market town and running back along the valley.
The roads are mostly B roads, narrow but good, with some single-track sections with passing places on the hill crossing, so pull in early for oncoming traffic. The town on the return has a bridge that runs one lane at a time. There is a gap of nearly twenty-seven miles without fuel after the start, so fill up in Pitlochry. A good choice in spring or autumn, when the birch and larch colour the shoreline.
