About this ride
A short loop from a small Pennine mill town in the foothills of the Dark Peak. The route climbs onto high bare moor, runs down a long reservoir valley with the hills close on both sides, then turns for home through quieter country on the eastern side.
The moor roads are open and exposed, with long gradients and wind that can catch you out on the tops, and there is one narrow, steep stretch among the lanes near the middle that asks for care. Most of the rest is quick A road. It suits an evening or a short day when the weather is settled; it is bleak in poor conditions, so check the forecast before you set out.
