About this ride
A short, concentrated circuit in the high hills where North and Mid Wales meet. A bleak moorland climb crosses a high pass, a quiet valley leads down to a long Victorian reservoir with its dam and stone-built surroundings, and the finish is a narrow lane threading through forest and up onto open ground before a steep descent.
The first half is B-road riding that rewards a smooth line and a steady throttle. The last stretch is single-track, with passing places, blind crests, livestock and a steep, tight descent, so it asks for patience and a proper look at the conditions before you commit. It is best for a confident rider on a handy bike, on a dry, clear day outside the winter months, ideally with time to stop and take in the water.
