About this ride
Southern Snowdonia boiled down to a single objective: a short, steep climb on a single-track lane to a high mountain saddle, reached through two quick river valleys and left again by a long, open descent towards a lake. The hillsides are bare, grazed and wide open, and the views repay the effort.
The valley roads either side are fast and easy, so treat them as warm-up and cool-down. The lane itself is another matter: very steep in places, with sheep, cattle grids, passing places and loose gravel in the bends. It suits confident riders who are happy in first and second gear, and it is best on a dry, clear day between spring and autumn. Fill up before you set off, as there is little fuel on the way.
